No is not a joke I learned at a nightclub down the road.
No is not convince me. No is not fuck me until I like it.
No is not press me down hoping it will stifle my screams.
No is not “I want it,” is not “I’m just too shy to say yes.”
No is not touch me, hold me, I need you.
No is not yes. I do not need you. I do not want you.
Because if I want you, I will beg to be touched, kissed, caressed.
I will say it. Not with my arms, with my mouth, the weight of language.
I am not asking for it because I wear a skirt or tight clothing.
I am not asking for anything because I put red lipstick on.
I am not five years old, I can use my words when I want something.
So I will remind you that no is exactly what it sounds like,
do not confuse my screams for pleasure or my pushes for teasing.
When men think no means yes, it is a sure sign this society is slipping.
“Hard to get” is a concept created by men who harbor the belief that
women must make a chase interesting, entertain while pleading.
But I am not playing a game, I am playing at nothing.
